By now we've all probably seen the fake ghost photos being created by various iPhone apps, but is there a useful side to the iPhone for paranormal research?
EMF Meters
The iPhone 3GS hardware incorporates hall-effect magnetic sensors for detecting in X, Y, and Z axis. It also has an 8-bit analog to digital convertor. This allows it to function as a 3 axis electronic compass, but also allows apps to use the sensors to provide EMF Meter functionality. There's even an iPhone version of the Ovilus. The resulting apps vary in quality and features but there are some which certainly do the job well. Some offer the ability for EMF spikes to trigger audio recordings and data logging.
Data Logging
There are various apps which provide data logging. This may be from sensors (such as EMF mentioned above) or by user input - which allow the user to quickly log events as they occur.
Audio recording
Some apps allow the iPhone to work as a voice recorder, with some specifically made with ghost hunting in mind. This includes EMF spike or noise level triggered recording.
Camera features
With the range of camera related apps there are many possible uses. Motion activated cameras, remote camera viewing etc...
Misc. Apps
Various other apps provide information such as solar activity, earth magnetic field, lunar phases, planetariums and lots more. Each may be useful for investigations.
