There was a recent sighting in Warrnambool in March 2007 check out: cfzaustralia.blogspot.com/2007/04/big-cat-in-warrnambool.htmlthese sighting are definitely becoming more frequent and could suggest that due to new developments taking place in rural areas these elusive creatures are now moving in closer to civilization. I myself do quite a bit of Game Hunting and have seen some Massive feral Cats which could support the Misidentification topic of this hugely debatable subject, anyone else wish to add to this?? Jason

Had an interesting experience of this once. When I was younger, my family and I used to live out on a 4 acre block, in Gippsland, out between Traralgon and Morwell, opposite some pine plantations for the paper mill nearby. The block sloped down at the back into a small valley, with another hill going up on the other side.
From our house you could quite clearly see the other side. One day I recall looking out across the valley, and seeing a large, black, cat like animal wandering along the other side. It eventually disappeared into some long grass in a neighbouring block. Being the naive young kid, I wandered to check it out, given if it was a panther it was quite a stupid thing to do, but I didn't really find anything to suggest what it might have been. All I know is it was big, black and cat like. Even from a distance it seemed to big to be a domestic cat.
This also seems to be on the complete opposite side of the state to what I hear in other stories...

Hi There D,
Very interesting indeed, there are alot of stories out there which strongly suggest that something definitely lurks right in our back yard, it's quite fascinating to think about and it would be good to see some conclusive evidence after all there are that many eye witness accounts, who knows what the future may hold!!!.
cheers mate and thanks for the story

I personally haven't seen anything which is panther-like, but I do have two excellent sources who say that they have - My father and brother. Both sightings were in the same location (around the Piliga State Forest near Coonabarabran in north-western NSW), but at completely different times.
I also know that before the NSW DPI website was redone there was an AgFact on black panthers...

We have recently moved to the western district of Victoria. I was talking to a friend a few weeks ago and I was telling her that a fox had been getting into our rubbish.
She said, " could be a panther " Which I didnt dismiss because anything is possible. She then went on to tell me that years earlier her brother was on his regular bread run from the bakery when he saw what he said was a panther standing in the grass beside the road with a rabbit in it's mouth.
There was also a sighting last year near Geelong. Two truck drivers (in seperate trucks) saw a panther run across the road in front of them.
I believe that they could exist, if it is true that the americans had them as mascots when they were over here for the war.

I Think it is sad that if in regards to Jasons comment to building in rural areas that these more common eye witness' are seeing the black cat/panthers. Obviously we are driving them from their natrual Habitat. I have lived down ottway way for 12years now, but havn't seen or heard anything... most of the time ACA shows like to give stories to reel people in and start Controversy. I personally can't believe it till I see it. After all these years surely they would have followed rivers threw small and/or major country towns to get to food, as food sources would be on the constant move from constant building developments, surely we would of seen more of them.

Many years ago myself and three mates were on the old Batemans Bay Hwy, mostly covered by bush now. When a call of nature came for one fella, i pulled of the road at about 10pm ish, as he got out no more than 30mts was a huge black cat with yellowish eyes. It was walking across the road and it just stoped and stared before racing off the road into the bush. With hi-beam and #4 x 100watt lights there was no mistaking what it was. It was staring maybe 5 - 10 seconds, we talked about it for years including Steve's wet trousers. We did some research and what we came up with was that when the US service men where over here they brought over their mascots. Some where there was information that they were ordered to destroy them by their superiors, but instead they releasesd them. If memory serves me that took place in Sth Aust in the 40's. There are a lot of stories in sheep country about disappearing sheep, just depends on how many farmers you know.

I was brought up in the uk and when I was growing up there was a regular big cat sighting.they called it the beast of bodmin. There were numerous sitings and sheep killings but nothing was ever proved. It was thought to be a black panther that was an illegal pet and released when it got to big for the owner. Who knows!!
