If this is dust, why did it only appear in one photo and not another taken a few seconds earlier?
Dust, although it is everywhere, is not spread evenly - wind, temperature etc... spreads it out throughout an area and keeps it moving. It can exist in concentrations which travel quickly past the lens.
To take this further this feature actually serves to reinforce the fact that the "orb" is much closer than what it appears in a photo. A particle/s illuminated by the flash a few centimeters from the lens is more likely to move out of frame before another picture is taken.
Try it - Go into a room walk around a bit, stirring up the dust. As the dust settles you'll find less "orbs" in the photographs.
Even if dust were spread evenly throughout an area there could still be variation as each shot is different, lighting, shutter speed, aperture and depth of field can all be changed automatically by the camera on each photograph.
