Many people ask why it is that most orbs seem to appear at supposedly haunted locations such as cemeteries.
Remember that moisture, dust and bugs can be anywhere and that dark backgrounds serve to present them well when out of focus in photographs. Add to that outside locations and/or older buildings and you tend to greatly increase the occurrence of particles and insects available to enter the area between the lens and point of focus.
We therefore will get more orbs. Other pass times just don't see many people out in the cold moisture ridden air in the middle of the night roaming in and out of abandoned buildings stirring up the dust and taking photographs.
While an "orb" appearing above uncle Arthur's grave at the moment of your visit may seem like a sign of his presence, keep in mind that the power of suggestion coupled with the ever present insects and dust in such places may be a more logical explanation.
During a visit to Port Fairy Cemetery to investigate the legend of a local ghost, we spent time examining the various "orbs" encountered and how they appeared on video, still photographs and thermal imagers. You may like to examine our investigation report.
This image is a video still frame showing a mosquito in flight near a tombstone.
These two pics were taken 3 seconds apart. The first was taken with a flash and shows a number of "orbs" - all were insects - you can notice one is nearing focus at the base of the image. The second picture was taken without a flash and with a slightly longer exposure. No "orbs" (insects) can be seen as there was no illumination to allow reflection back to the lens.
