Following a post I submitted earlier this year about my visit to a conference at the La Trobe at Beechworth Resort - formally the Mayday Hills Hospital and Beechworth Lunatic Assylum, I have come across a media related report on the ghost tours conducted there which I think will be of interest to the majority of people. The web site is:- www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2008/07/28/2316655.htmYou can either read about the assylum or you can download a commentary by the guide of the ghost tour. I found the commentary more interesting. It gives the details of the history of the buildings, the former patients, and the alledged sightings of spirits still haunting the area. I believe this would be a great place to conduct an investigation and also that I experienced quite a bit of activity on my last visit. The Grevillea Ward is definately a place not to miss. I would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers Lee

Hi Lee,
Very interesting indeed, the guide was very informative in his presentation, yes it would be a good place for an Investigation, Hopefully we will get around to it in the new year.

Hi Jason,
This place is very interesting. The accommodation where patrons stay are the original psychiatric wards where patients were kept. I stayed in a wing of the Linaker Building. There are big thick steel doors cutting off where I stayed from the rest of the building if required. (Like doors that would be closed at night). I have very interesting photos taken from that weekend that I can't find physical explanations for. Some of the buildings are so derelict - just locked and left for years 30 +. There is a basement area from the mid 1850's, where they don't know what happened - this is really an amazing place. I am trying to organise a trip of Canberra people to stay for a night sometime in November and do the ghost tour. If I can organise a weekend and talk to Adam(the ghost tour leader) about perhaps doing a private tour, would you or others be interested in meeting up? Could be a good indication of whether an investigation by GRI would be worthwhile. It's still all the planning but your thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers Lee

Hi Lee, I will have a chat with Darren and the others and see what they would like to do, I would certainly be interested in participating if your plans go ahead, perhaps if you are not busy on Monday night you could join us in the chatroom, Darren will be there as will Kate or perhaps email Darren Direct with your idea as he is the focal point for all prospective GRI Investigations, but I'm in if your plans go ahead. It certainly has an Interesting History, one can only imagine what mysteries lie behind the closed doors, especially the ones that have remained closed for 30 odd years, what type of activity did you capture, Orbs, EVP ?. Hi Jason,
I captured a lot of orbs in my photographs. A couple of friends took pictures around the same time and caught the same anomolies. I guess the one picture which I find interesting was taken during the day and it captured a purple orb/face in some trees. The most amazing thing for me was that on the ghost tour I stayed behind in various places to take photo's when the group I was with moved on. I found when I went to catch up, I could hear footsteps behind me. At first I thought it was my own steps, but then I would stop and listen. It sounded like someone was directly behind me walking on the gravel. When I stopped - the sound stopped. I have a photo of an orb taken when I pointed the camera in the direction the noise came from. The last night I stayed in the accommodation - there was a terrible thunder storm. I have captured orbs in the room I stayed in which was a suite in the Linikar Wing. I thought it really strange because the room we stayed in was on the third floor and yet there were motion detectors in the bathroom which staff told me went off regularly. There is no way anybody could reach the third foor window of my room's bathroom from the outside. There is definately strange things happening there. I will try and post the pictures.

Hi, The Mayday Hills hospital has so much atmoshere even in the day time. I experienced footsteps behind me as I was walking back to the room onlong the road about 11.45pm. I kept turning around and shining the torch behind me, I was rather relieved when I made it back to our room. It never worry's me going anywhere at night by myself except for this place is very creepy at night. There is a book that we bought a while ago that Latrobe Beechworth can order for you called" The Lion of Beechworth" by D.A Craig An Account of the History of the Mayday Hills Hospital Beechworth 1867-1995

Hi Paul,
Where abouts do you order that book on Mayday Hills from? I would love to read more about the hospital's history before my next visit. I too heard those footsteps about the same time as your did, on my last visit. It's a very unexplored place of paranormal activity I believe. Did you do the tour? Did you visit the Grevillea Ward? I am glad you enjoyed your visit. Please let me know your findings.

Hi Brian,
I am so sorry....I accidentally got your name wrong and called you Paul in my last post. I stayed on the third floor of the Liniker Building. Is that the nurses quarters you are referring too? I think our room was 306? One of the strangest things that happened to me - was that my hair drier (less than twelve months old) blew up in my hand while drying my hair. We also had two tv's in our room and one kept showing snow on it. When I took a photo of the room - they kept showing orbs. I thought it strange that our room had motion detectors on the windows of the bathroom. When I asked reception staff about the detectors - she replied "oh they go off regularly in those rooms". The staff are a wealth of knowledge about happenings in the resort. I can't wait for my next visit.

Hi Lee, Yes the Liniker Building is the nurses quarters I was talking about. We found strange electrical problems too, like lift door opening by itself on third floor while we were sitting in lounge suite adjacent to the lift area. Sometimes the sliding door at front of building would open & close different speeds. A few of the staff at the cafe were telling us stories of various strange electrical problems they encounted regularly.
See Haunted sites in forum for more info on Liniker Building.
The book Lion of Beechworth by D.A. Craig was ordered at hotel reception at Latrobe Beechworth. Contact them to see if you can get it, if unavailable I could lend our copy.
I think Beechworth Mayday Hills Hospital/Lunatic Asylum is an ideal place for obtaining good paranormal research/evidence.
Regards Brian

Hi all. I've also stayed in the Nurses quarters just this weekend passed... now known as the Linaker Hotel. We stayed in room 308. On staying the first night and coming down the next morning the people beneath us (on level 2) asked us if we had heard the people running up and down the hallway on level 3. We hadn't heard anything and we were the only guests on the floor that night and we are pretty sure it wasn't us (lol). On the second night there was the most intense booming/knocking throughout the floor in the early hours of the morning. It was 2 sets of 5 insanely loud knocks which sounded very close or like they would come through the wall, like someone throwing their whole weight at a door and the sound resounding across the entire third floor...or pounding at full force with a fist (or two). Not just politely knocking. I simply couldn't describe in here well enough in words. I'm not really one who seeks this sort of thing or had much of an interest... But this experience has definitely changed me somewhat in what I believe.
On that same night and the following day we left the main lobby doors were stuck open often having mechanical issues that couldn't be overridden meaning the doors would come open at all times. Definitely a haunted place. When we packed up to leave our room at 9.30am everyone else has left so i didn't have anyone to ask.. i did see the Manager Dean for a minute but he was in a rush so didn't ask him. Perhaps I should call him back...
Btw the metal doors in the Linaker are simply fire doors and would not have been locked at night/had nothing to do with the asylum in that way... Linaker was only for nurses but as it's on the same grounds (the old maniacal ward is very close by through the trees).
