Kathleen from Glenroy submitted this image for review, the story is below: ... taken during the day at the old Melbourne gaol ... if it is a ghost has no legs, and looks like it has a hood on which when they were hanged they wore, also to the left of this you can see a face, (maybe someone walking past) also to the left is the cell which is supposed to be haunted by a female ghost who hanged herself in the cell.The picture is currently under analysis, comments are welcomed. |

It appears that the likely cause is a natural object being silhouetted by overexposed natural light from the window behind. The back lighting often causes incomplete details as is evident in the the smaller bars running horizontal across the window not being visible - apart from the tell tale bleeding at the edges. One possible scenario is that there is a male person to the left taking/viewing a photo whilst also holding a coat or jacket. As such a cause of natural origin cannot be ruled out and seems more likely, we would rate the image as "natural explanation highly likely". Also the area in question is outside cell 9 on level 3 in the only remaining wing of the Old Melbourne Gaol. Our records indicate this entire wing housed only male prisoners, with the exception of the condemned cells at the opposite end where prisoners spent their final night before execution (this was also on level 2, not the upper level). We have heard stories about a female who fell/was pushed from one of the upper levels of this block but that was not near the area in question. |

Hi all, this thread reminds me of the time i was a security patrolman and had to enter the old jail to investigate motion sensor alarms occuring in a particular cell, apparently home to a chinese inmate called An Gar (murder on goldfields) anyway, could find nothing to set off alarms which isn't really that unusual, but....it is one hell of a scary place and something paranormal DEFINITELY fills the place, especially down at the gallows end....About the picture...umm....looks like a bird to me too.

Hi Darren and Kate,
I can't recall the exact cell number but it was on ground level about 4th, 5th or 6th on the left if standing with your back to gift shop. There was a death mask of An Gar (or Ga) and a small blurb about his history. Apart from that i didn't see or feel anything unusual.I had a key for the old main door and entered the jail proper through the gift shop. I only had a torch as i couldn't find a switch or control. I found out later that I didn't have a key to open the cell containing the switchboard to activate the lights anyway.....The thing that was unnerving was the feeling of dread and being surrounded by the blackness, almost being consumed by it the further i walked toward the end of the building, the gallows end, even the light of the torch seemed to disappear into nothingness. At the gallows end i felt suddenly colder, a lot colder and also felt instinctively that i was being touched or about to be hit, every hair and goose bump i had stood to attention, needless to say i did a quick 2 sec sweep with the torch and i was outa there quick!
Interestingly i was asked to investigate the same alarm on 2 more occasions that same night. I checked the cell, reset alarm and exited QUICKLY the 2nd time. The third time about 3.30am i entered gaol,@#%$ the cell, reset alarm exited. I contacted my control base and told them that i won't be going in there again...so don't bother calling me, the control operator said that was a shame as others (guards) he contacted wouldn't go in there at all. Something was in there beside the cold and dark which i am accustomed to. I felt something there, I know something's there.

Hi Colin,
I have not been in the gaol on my own and don't think I would like too, I know the cell you are talking about with An Gar...I was actually wondering if it may have been another cell further down towards the gallows on the same side, I have had a few experiences of my own in the gaol.

I havent been back here for a while and have leart heaps since, actualy this isnt a bird too big and human height but since puting this up me and my group have gone over before and after photos of this pic the before pic shows a woman with long black hair wearing a strapless black dress walking down the steps dont know if this is her and some how because of the light bleeding on the steps has caused the shadow ghost but we debunked it ourselfs thankyou guys for your input  |
